Movie Review: 'The Heat'

In theaters Friday, June 28, 'The Heat' gives audiences a dose of combustible comedic chemistry.

Director Paul Feig, along with stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, proves that sometimes you just roll camera and let your funny people be funny.
In his follow-up to the surprise hit 'Bridesmaids' director Feig has shown a gift for giving audiences some very funny women. Melissa McCarthy, as a foul-mouthed Boston cop, is just as funny in 'The Heat' as she was in 'Bridesmaids.'
Sandra Bullock, again, shows that she has some impressive comedic skills of her own.  Her straight-laced, uptight FBI agent Sarah Ashburn is the polar opposite to McCarthy's "loose cannon" Shannon Mullins. Both have teamed up, begrudgingly, to take down a ruthless drug lord.
There's nothing new here in terms of plot. We've all seen the mismatched cop routine on film before. But, not since 'Midnight Run' has it been done in a genuinely funny and profane manner where the film's stars have genuine chemistry on screen.
The supporting cast is full of pleasant surprises, as well. With 'SNL,' 'MadTV,' and 'In Living Color' alums throughout, director Feig certainly pulled out all the stops in trying to make us laugh.
There are some of the requisite bonding moments, of course, between McCarthy and Bullock. For the most part, those moments work, even if they're formulaic tropes of the buddy-cop genre.
I didn't care. I wasn't expecting 'Citizen Kane' and you shouldn't either.
What you should expect is an R-rated, laugh out loud, "oh-no-she-didn't," and hilarious time at the movies. The trailers and commercials only skim the surface and were probably limited, due to the constant profanity, on what clips could be used in ads. There's a lot to laugh at in 'The Heat.'
Melissa McCarthy...you are one funny lady. Whatever movie you're in next, I'll be one of the first in line.
Get out of the heat and into 'The Heat' this weekend, Flixnerds!
